Times Printing Joins WDNR’s Green Tier Program
Times Printing’s proactive involvement in the state of Wisconsin’s new Green Tier program signifies a strong commitment to superior environmental performance. The revolutionary Green Tier Program, the first of its type in Wisconsin, provides incentives that enable good environmental citizens to go beyond compliance and perform to a higher environmental level while allowing the DNR to focus its resources on facilities not meeting requirements.
Tom Eggert, Eastern Wisconsin Environmental Assistance Coordinator, WDNR, stated, "The complexity of environmental challenges facing Wisconsin demands that we move beyond the current compliance model. Green Tier represents the next generation of environmental regulatory theory. With both imagination and courage, environmental leaders such as Times Printing are utilizing this new cooperative approach to produce superior environmental performance."
Recently, Times Printing replaced three catalytic oxidizers with one regenerative thermal oxidizer. This dramatically reduced energy use and increased destruction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Times Printing has taken steps beyond compliance in other areas besides air protection, including: setting up recycling programs for ink and waste-absorbent materials, replacing light fixtures throughout the plant with high-energy-efficient lighting, and replacing solvents with more environmentally friendly materials that are biodegradable. Times Printing will expand upon this success as its Environmental Management System continues to identify areas for improvement. |

Tier 1 for Times
As a Tier 1 member of the Green Tier Program, Times Printing is dedicated to building systems to maintain and, in many cases, exceed environmental standards. Times has committed to implement an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS), or a functionally equivalent system, within one year of acceptance. Wendy Scholler, Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Coordinator for Times Printing, stated, "I am excited about this process; though it means a lot of hard work and commitment by many departments. I know in the long run this process will help our management of environmental and safety issues. My goal is to introduce safety into this process to establish a full Environmental Health and Safety Management system, incorporating all of our compliance elements together into one manageable system."
The key elements to establish and maintain a full EMS System.
- Identify all products, activities, or services that have significant impact on the environment
- Identify and ensure access to relevant laws and regulations
- Set environmental goals for the company
- Establish roles and responsibilities for environmental management
- Ensure that Times’ employees are trained for these responsibilities
- Establish processes for internal and external communications on environmental management issues
- Write EMS documentation
- Establish document control
- Identify, plan, and manage operations and activities in line with the EMS policy
- Identify potential emergencies and prepare procedures for prevention and response
- Monitor key activities and track performance
- Maintain and manage records of EMS performance
- Schedule EMS Audits
